Never attempt to squeeze a boil or abscess – this may only serve to force the infected matter further into the bloodstream.

To bring any boil or abscess to a head use heat. Use either a simple warm application or better still, a poultice.

A poultice made from chopped garlic or white bread mixed with a little hot milk or water is ideal. When applying a poultice use a clean, non-irritating fabric and hold in place with a bandage. Apply slightly damp and change every few hours.

If you have access to herbs such as Slippery Elm or Comfrey then consider using these for a poultice as they are reputed to help really painful, inflamed areas.

Once the boil or abscess ruptures and starts to discharge keep the area washed and clean and cover with gauze.

Recent studies show that a deficiency in Zinc may cause repeated boils. Consider eating zinc rich foods such as meats, seafood and whole grains or supplementation with bio-available forms of Zinc.
